Pedals for Medals 2008

The 2008 Pedal for Medals Ride is a cyclist’s dream comes true! It’s like a cycling vacation in a sense. Where else can anyone who loves to bicycle find the opportunity to spend four glorious days riding his or her bike through some of the most beautiful country anywhere? Start in the beautiful Adirondacks and pedal down to the Finger Lakes. On top of that, riders enjoy three great meals and numerous beverage and snack rest stops each day, excellent hotel accommodations each night, bag transfers between hotels and full SAG support throughout the ride. Riders of all ability levels will enjoy the ride…it’s not a race!

The ride route is designed to provide a scenic ride over less traveled country roads where possible. It has been fine-tuned over the last several years to be a doable route for even the occasional rider and yet offers a reasonable challenge to experienced riders. Rest and snack stops at approximately 20 mile intervals help break the day’s ride into a series of short rides between points. SAG vehicles and an EMT patrol the route to provide assistance where needed. A dedicated bike technician is available throughout the ride to make repairs or adjustments as needed.

Each day after your ride, you will gather with your fellow riders at the hotel to enjoy the great camaraderie that only a group ride such as this can inspire. What better time to revisit the day’s ride and compare thoughts. Meet new biking friends who share your interest and passion for this sport. Share your best cycling story with your new friends as well as hear theirs. Relax and enjoy the good life!

The best part of the ride is that fact that it supports a GREAT cause…Special Olympics! All of your effort and hard work in raising money for the ride will be rewarded by the pleasure of the fours days of superb riding and, the money you raised will go toward support of the many sporting programs sponsored by Special Olympics, including cycling.

What a great opportunity to do something you love and support Special Olympics! Register now to reserve a slot on the 2008 ride team at www.firstgiving.com/pedalsformedals

Central Region Athletes Lead Conference

Central Region athletes Diane Budnar and Raymell Temaungil joined 1,000 law enforcement officers at the 25th Annual International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference in Buffalo, New York. Along with four other Special Olympics New York athlets, Diane and Raymell acted as emcees for every general session during the four day conference. While not speaking to the crowd, they met law enforcement officers from 42 different states and countries, participated in classes, attended dinners and even took a trip across the border to Canada! Above, Diane and Raymell try to extend some Central New York warmth to officers from Hawaii. Both young women did an amazing job, and helped to show why it is important for law enforcement officers to help support Special Olympics. Thank you Diane and Raymell!
